Green Tea as a Potential Hair Loss Remedy

Hair Loss has been mankind’s Achilles Heel from the early times of Julius Caesar to the 21st century.
Many modern hair treatment solutions and chemicals claim that they can cure alopecia but nothing seems to work out right. Some of these chemical treatments can trigger major baldness and worse they trigger negative side effects.

That is why, millions of people would go for Natural Hair Treatment that helps them prevent and cease baldness. For people looking for a natural way to counteract baldness, green tea has been touted as a potential hair thinning remedy.

Green tea refers to tea leaves that are dried and steamed without fermenting, as opposed to black tea. It originated from China but has been associated with many other Asian cultures. It is believed to ward off signs of aging as it contains lots of natural plant antioxidants. It is widely reputed to provide major health benefits.

Using green tea to grow hair probably relates to the evidence for influencing circulating hormones in the body. A high intake of green tea correlates to higher levels of sex hormone-binding protein - or globulin, which carries hormones like testosterone around the body in a bound, unusable form so that tissues cannot use it directly.

Testosterone is usually carried around the body by this binding protein, therefore, reducing levels of free testosterone, so that it cannot be converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the hair follicle, which is thought to shorten the hair cycle and cause hair loss in men. Green tea is thought to effect the 5a-reductase type I enzyme, which converts testosterone to DHT. There are two forms of 5a-reductase, and type I is the enzyme in higher amounts around the body, but it is the type II enzyme, which is thought to be responsible for most of the DHT formed in the hair follicle.

Today, more and more clinical evidences indicate that green tea can be a potential hair loss treatment. Most of the research so far has focused on epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG, the most important antioxidant found in green tea.

Green tea has been known to suppress the production of Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). TNF-alpha has been implicated in cancer and other inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, and also in androgenetic alopecia or baldness.

There are also evidences that point out that consumption of high amounts of green tea increases the amount of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in the bloodstream. SHBG catches testosterone before it can be converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

It is very likely that green helps prevent baldness and even stimulate regrowth, but more research needs to be done to establish the claim, and to find the appropriate doses and methods of delivery.

The important thing to remember is that green tea has not been conclusively shown to cure baldness, either in animals or humans, but emerging evidences shows great promise. So go ahead and try green tea as a remedy for hair loss and baldness, just do not expect a miracle.
