Hair Loss and Treatment Options

One of the most common medical problems of today is hair loss and treatment for it is the most sought-after medical treatment. Each day, there are millions of people around the world that struggle with hair loss. Sadly, most of these people are not that successful in their attempt because there is a lack of information pertaining to hair loss and what it is exactly.

Are you simply going to let all of these things hinder you? Do not resign to thinning hair or going bald because you could always check on what options you have and start taking action today. Healing starts when you decide to visit your doctor and ask for guidance as regards your hair loss especially if it is sudden and unexplainable.

You could look for plenty of helpful resources for managing hair loss. You could check what your options are but then you would have to always remember to check on what your doctor would say before you would come to testing any medicine or product that promises you hair growth or halting your hair loss.

Many of men struggle with hair loss as they age but not too many face the fact of it until they are older and the hair loss occurrence is already severe. Another problem for most is the early onset thinning. There are those who start to notice that their hair is thinning as they get into their mid to late thirties but then it could start earlier. You have to bear in mind that hair loss and treatment search is not a very unique situation as there are millions of others who are facing the same situation.

Shaving your head is one of the ways for you to deal with hair loss. There are those who start shaving their heads when they are still very young and it is not a taboo anymore especially that it has become a fashionable hair style (with all those celebrities sporting this do). If you have been used to seeing your head full of hair, then this would have to take some getting used to but there are plenty of advantages to it though such as lesser shower time and you will not have to be too worried about buying hair products or to be obviously worried about your receding hair line.

Losing hair can be a difficult thing for men and women to handle; there are a lot who even cringe at the idea of seeing themselves with receding hair line. It is indeed a sad thing to see the men and women around you who are problematic about hair loss. But then of course there are options that they could see should they be very eager to find hair loss solutions to their problems.

As far as hair loss and treatment are concerned, there would be nothing better than checking in with the doctor. It may take a while before things work but then the waiting would often yield good results. For anyone who is problematic with hair loss, patience would be more important. Without having due patience, seeing the result would be close to impossible.

Propecia The Other Side Effects of the Popular Hair Loss Treatment for Men

Since the beginning of the year, Merck, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, has been confronted with several lawsuits, piling up one after another, for its failure to adequately warn users about the side effects of the anti-baldness drug Propecia.

What Is Propecia

Propecia is one of the two only FDA-approved drugs for hair loss treatment for men, specifically male pattern baldness.

It contains 1mg of finasteride and was initially introduced as a treatment for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). It works as a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, which means, it reduces DHT levels. DHT build-up in the hair follicles alters the hair protein synthesis, which then causes hair loss.

Propecia has been the first in the list of products used in hair loss treatment for men with pattern baldness. However, in exchange for hair growth are hair-raising side effects including the loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorder, among others.

When it was introduced as a hair loss treatment for men in 1992, Merck stated that only a small percentage of men experienced Propecia’s side effects, which eventually disappeared after they stopped medication. These warnings were augmented by the FDA recently, mandating that potentially permanent impotence could also occur. However, apparently for some, these warnings came way too late.

The Unknown Side Effects

In 2009, Randy Santmann, only 22, committed suicide after Propecia rendered him mentally unstable and sexually impotent. Another victim, Paul Priore said he experienced erectile dysfunction during and after stopping medication. It states in his lawsuit, “The Propecia that he consumed caused him physiological and emotional impairments which affected his personal and professional life.” In addition, he says he experienced “cognitive impairment,” rendering him incapable of doing his work.

The recent FDA report said that 59 of 421 complaints were still experiencing sexual side effects three months after stopping medication. Merck has now updated its warning label on Propecia on April 11, 2012. It states, “Propecia may cause loss of sexual desire, inability to ejaculate, and inability to reach orgasm. These sexual dysfunctions may continue for some time after men stop using the baldness drug.”
